Civil rights protesters in China are being dumped in psychiatric wards where they are forced to take mind-altering drugs and given electric shocks.
The treatment is handed out to petitioners - victims of corrupt local governments who have come to the cities to seek justice.
They travel thousands of miles to reach Beijing, but instead of being allowed to voice their grievances they are thrown into illegal "black jails" and many end up placed in mental institutions.
"Pain? You don't know pain until you have had 220 volts going through your body," said Hu Guohong, who had come to Beijing to seek compensation for three months' back pay.
He suffered two hours of electric shock for ten consecutive days.
"My whole insides… it felt like my intestines were turning like clothes put through a washing machine," he said.
"There are a lot of people who are locked up there. Just like me, protesters. They round you up and simply dump you in the hospital. If you don't do what they say, you get electrocuted."
Sky News gained access to one of the mental institutions and spoke to those behind the bars of an exercise courtyard.
"Some people in here are not even diagnosed with a mental illness. There are all kinds of cases, but most of us are not ill," one man told us.
Liu Feiyue is a lawyer representing hundreds of those detained.
His home in Wuhan in South China is under surveillance by police and we had to meet secretly late at night.
He says the practice of putting protesters in mental hospitals is widespread.
"They want to stop the protesters from voicing their dissenting views," he said.
"So they lock them up in mental hospitals. This is becoming a serious epidemic in China."
Sky News wrote to the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health to ask why mental hospitals were being used as dumping grounds for those seeking justice.
We received no answer.
A spokesman at the Chinese Embassy in London said it was "not in a position to respond in this regard".

This was certainly propaganda for the future World War (isn't O'Reilly a big user of "warrior poet"? Might tell you something, this movie is NOT "left wing") showing how all Arabs have a deep seeded hatred of America (even the moderate ones, which they obviously should considering what America's leaders have done to the Middle East), with or without Bin Laden (paving the way for Bin Laden's [fake] "death" so the "War on Terror" continues).
I did enjoy the humor, but you could sense the undertones of propaganda as it kept talking about how many terrorist cells there are around the world and how we should all fear them and things like that [not to that extreme mind and the overall message was good on the surface, that we are all just people trying to live our lives on Earth].

The Radiohead song "No Surprises" springs to mind with events spiralling out of control (though obviously 100% controlled), I said in my Megan Fox post (I hope my mix of sex and violence isn't too disturbing) of the Georgian conflict "watch it escalate" on 08/08/08 and in today's times (10th) the headline is: "Hundreds die as war in Georgia escalates" (Edit: Following day 11th Times headline, is "We helped in Iraq - now help us, beg Georgians"[referring to Georgia's troops it had in Iraq but I think it is directed at the brainwashed British sheeple (who think their government "helped" Iraq by removing Saddam and bombing them almost to dust), with an image of a traumatized Georgian woman holding a baby for some added emotional blackmail]... we "helped" in Iraq?!?!?! Murdoch is hilariously evil.). Edit: The chaoz is in South Ossetia (Oz) and it's flag is the flag of St. George which is basically the Knights Templar flag (pre-Chrstian solar cross, the 4 crosses are narrower towards the center) imo. Dick Cheney, the war machine caricature that he is says Russia's actions "must not go unanswered" so he's in total chaos mode let's see what "he" does (whatever he's told, then tells Bush to do).

An American man was murdered and his wife and their tour guide seriously injured in Beijing yesterday when a Chinese man went ‘berserk’ with a knife on the first day of the Olympics.
Todd and Barbara Bachman were sightseeing with their daughter, former Olympian Elisabeth, who is married to the U.S. men’s volleyball team coach Hugh McCutcheon.
Mr Bachman was chief executive of his family’s £40million home and garden centre business based in Lakeville, Minnesota, and also a major philanthropist.
They were visiting an ancient landmark – the 13th century Drum Tower, three miles from the main Olympic site – when they became involved in a row with a stranger, named as 47-year-old Tang Yongming.
Witnesses told The Mail on Sunday that their attacker, who apparently spoke English, ‘slashed wildly’ at the group, killing Mr Bachman instantly. He then climbed up the tower and clung to a rail for 30 minutes, before jumping to his death.
Inexplicably, police took nearly 90 minutes to reach the scene and US diplomats were said last night to be seeking an urgent explanation for the delay.
In keeping with China’s determination to control anything that could damage its reputation, officers warned witnesses not to speak to journalists. [GRRR Those Chinese have no press freedoms!!! We should so bomb them!]
The killing cast a shadow over the Games, which opened amid unprecedented levels of security with a spectacular ceremony on Friday. It left the US volleyball squad – of which the couple’s daughter was once a member – ‘deeply shocked’.
Jim Easton, an American member of the International Olympic Committee, said: ‘It appears to be a random attack by a deranged man.’
Mrs Bachman and the unnamed tour guide were being treated last night at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Her daughter was not injured.
One witness said that an argument between the group and Yongming, from Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, began in the square in front of the ancient landmark at about 12.20pm [2012] local time."

Detectives investigating a double murder in Newcastle upon Tyne have revealed the victims were Chinese students.
The man and woman, who both suffered severe head injuries, were found in separate bedrooms of a ground floor flat in Croydon Road, in the city's West End area at 4.30pm yesterday.
A source described the scene as 'gruesome' and the nature of the injuries meant officers were unable to say what kind of weapon had been used.
Neither the man, discovered lying on the bed in the back bedroom, nor the woman, found on a bed in the front bedroom, has been formally identified.
However Northumbria Police said the pair we believed to be students and that officers were trying to contact their next of kin.
A police spokesman said: 'The pair had both suffered significant head injuries.'
The cause of death has not yet been determined and postmortem examinations will be carried out at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Croydon Road has been cordoned off while forensic officers searched the two-bedroom property for evidence.
Last night a silver hatchback parked close to the crime scene was loaded on to a covered police lorry while extra police patrols were on duty to reassure residents in the West End, an area popular with students and Asian families.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: 'They have not been here for long and they just kept themselves to themselves.'
The crime scene is less than 200 yards from a primary school and a few minutes' walk from Newcastle United's home ground.
By a tragic coincidence [no such thing] the flat is just a couple of doors away from the former home of 11-year-old schoolboy Wesley Neailey, who was murdered in 1998 by convicted paedophile Dominic McKilligan.
McKilligan, who was jailed for life in 1999, had recently been released from a young offenders institution before the murder. Wesley's parents still live in the Croydon Road area. [he was programmed (to kill an 11 year old) at that young offenderws institution, I assume]
Another neighbour, who also asked not to be named, added: 'This is a nice place to live and we have been here for 15 years but seeing all the police activity has brought back memories of Wesley.' [a favoured spot then for "illuminati" mind control blood rituals]
Detective Chief Inspector Mick Paterson, leading the investigation, appealed for those with information to call 03456 043 043.

Chinese man stabs to death relative of US Olympic coach in Beijing

A knife-wielding Chinese man has killed the male relative of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a popular tourist site in Beijing.
Tang Yongming, 47, attacked the American man and woman at the 13th century Drum Tower which lies just three miles from the main Olympics site.
Tang then committed suicide by throwing himself form the second floor of the tower.
The female relative of the coach was seriously injured in the attack, as was a female Chinese tour guide.

The attack occurred just hours after competition started for the Olympic Games, a source of national pride for China.
Police blocked off streets leading to the Drum Tower immediately after the attack and cordoned off the area with yellow police tape. [yellow brick road]
Security officers were examining the scene on the tower and below.
'They are deeply saddened and shocked,' a spokesman for the U.S. Olympic Committee, said of the volleyball team.

The government has imposed unprecedented security measures in the capital to prevent protests or other trouble.
A U.S. Embassy spokesman said: 'We are aware of the reports of the accidents suffered by two American citizens.
'We are working with the Chinese authorities to find out more on the cause of the incident.'
The Americans 'were not wearing apparel or anything that would have specifically identified them as being members of our delegation' or as Americans.
He said that it was 'too early to say' whether the U.S. delegation or athletes will require additional security.
Jennie Finch, a member of the U.S. softball team, said her heart skipped a beat when she heard about the attack, but was undaunted.
'I'm here with my husband and son, so it's not easy but we're living our dreams and we're not going to live in fear,' she said.
A White House official said U.S. President George Bush, who is in Beijing for the start of the Games, was aware of the attack.
'The President has been informed and his heart goes out to the families of the victims,' a White House official said.
'The White House and U.S. Embassy have offered whatever assistance the family needs. U.S. officials have also been in touch with Chinese authorities on the matter.]
A U.S. embassy spokeswoman said diplomats had been dispatched to the Beijing hospital where the surviving tourist and the local tour guide had been rushed shortly after noon.
Attacks on foreigners in China are extremely rare. A Canadian model was murdered last month in Shanghai, but police said that was because she stumbled onto a burglary.
In March, a screaming, bomb-strapped hostage-taker who commandeered a bus with 10 Australians aboard in the popular tourist city of Xi'an was shot to death by a police sniper.

Shanghai and Beijing are still safer than most foreign cities of their size.
Punishments for crimes against foreigners are heavier than for crimes against Chinese, and police-linked neighbourhood watch groups are highly vigilant.
Chinese are not allowed to own guns.
Even so, the U.S. government now warns Americans against muggings, beatings and even car-jackings, especially in the nightlife and shopping districts of large cities.
Built in the 13th century, the Drum Tower is one of the few ancient structures still in Beijing, and was used to tell time in imperial China for the city, using drummers who pounded their instruments to mark the hours.
